ABOUT
VIRTUAL ACADEMY
Our Virtual Academy takes the distance out of distance learning by partnering with families to provide rigorous academic preparation that is teacher-mentored, parent-directed, and customized to meet the needs of students from all academic backgrounds. For the 2026–27 school year, Michigan Elite Academy is proud to partner with Brighton Area Schools, the #1 school district in Livingston County with an A+ rating in academics and athletics. Located just two miles from our Academy, the partnership is a natural fit, giving our student-athletes the opportunity to work with some of Brighton’s best and brightest teachers in our space throughout the school day while receiving a personalized learning experience built around their individual academic needs.

OUR HYBRID LEARNING PROGRAM
We have designed a program and school setting meant to enhance the educational experience for the student-athlete.
Public school diploma
Graduating students will earn a high school diploma from Brighton HS. BAS uses Michigan Virtual as their online partner.
COURSE OFFERINGS
Courses are offered at any time, any place, any pace and structure to provide the needed flexibility for our student-athletes to succeed.
NCAA Approved courses
Students and families will work with a counselor to ensure course work meets NCAA requirements. Virtual schooling does not affect college acceptances.
On-site certified teachers
Students receive daily instruction with Brighton-certified teachers and mentors at the academy.
IN-PERSON CLASSES
On-site teachers will provide one-to-one, small-group, and whole-group instruction daily.
ONLINE CLASSES
For courses where a certified teacher cannot be on-site, students will be assigned a certified teacher for the course that will meet with them online.
BALANCED CLASSES
Courses utilize a mixture of online content and textbooks with a balanced approach to screen-time.
TIME, LOCATION, & RESOURCES
Physical classroom space and schedule will be provided at the academy. Technology, internet access, and tech support will be provided as needed. Public school services such as special education and counseling are available to students as needed.
MEET THE STAFF
Dwight Helminen
A Brighton native, Dwight Helminen played three seasons at the University of Michigan before being drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the 2002 NHL Draft. He went on to a professional career that included time in the NHL, AHL, Finland, and the Czech Republic. Following his playing career, Dwight transitioned into player development, working with the Brighton Renegades, Hartland Huskies, and now Michigan Elite Academy as a Skills Coach.
Kip Miller
A Lansing native, Kip Miller starred at Michigan State University, winning the 1990 Hobey Baker Award before playing 449 NHL games across a 17-year professional career. Following his playing career, Kip moved into coaching and player development with Miller Power Skating, Biggby AAA, and Michigan Elite Hockey, including leading the Junior Prospects program to three straight championships from 2023–2025.
Luke Morgan
A Brighton native, Luke Morgan played collegiately at Lake Superior State and the University of Michigan, appearing in 173 NCAA games before beginning his professional career in the ECHL. Alongside his playing career, Luke has moved into coaching and player development as a Skills Coach and Junior Prospects Coach with Michigan Elite Hockey.
Sam Posa
A Grand Blanc native, Sam Posa played four seasons in the OHL, winning the 2010 Memorial Cup with the Windsor Spitfires and later serving as team captain, before a seven-year professional career in North America and Europe. He transitioned into coaching with Little Caesars AAA and the Flint Firebirds and is now an Assistant Coach with the OHL’s Saginaw Spirit. Sam also serves as a Skills Coach and Junior Prospects Coach with Michigan Elite Hockey.
